Leucovorin in Autism: A Targeted Approach to Support Development

At Alsop Pediatric Concierge, we take a personalized and thoughtful approach to caring for children
with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Every child is unique, and our goal is to support their
development in a way that is both evidence-informed and individualized.

What is Leucovorin?
Leucovorin is an active form of folate (vitamin B9) that bypasses several steps in the body’s normal
folate metabolism.

Unlike standard folic acid, it is readily usable by the brain and cells.

Why Folate Matters in Autism
Folate plays a critical role in brain development, neurotransmitter production, DNA synthesis, and
methylation pathways. Some children with autism have differences in how their bodies process
folate, which can impact development.

How Leucovorin Can Help
Leucovorin delivers active folate directly into the system, helping bypass metabolic issues. Potential
benefits may include improved speech, better engagement, improved focus, and behavioral
regulation.

Do We Need Lab Testing Before Starting?
I do not feel it is necessary to perform lab testing prior to starting Leucovorin. Testing can be costly,
results may not change treatment decisions, and clinical response is often the most practical guide.
Safety and Considerations
Leucovorin is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include irritability, hyperactivity, sleep
changes, and mild GI upset.

Our Approach
We focus on individualized care, careful dosing, and close follow-up to support each child’s needs.
